Legal & compatibility

Independent compatibility project

Steelbound is an independently developed emulator focused on Steel Battalion. It provides replacement implementations of Xbox system interfaces so the original game can run on modern PCs.

Steelbound is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Capcom or Microsoft.

Your game, supplied by you

Steelbound does not include or distribute the original game, Xbox BIOS files, or Microsoft SDK libraries. You need your own original copy of Steel Battalion and a disc image that you are legally entitled to create and use. Ownership of a disc does not automatically permit every copying method.

Compatibility adjustments

Your disc image is opened read-only and remains unchanged. During execution, Steelbound uses compatibility hooks and targeted runtime patches, including replacement behavior for media validation and save-game signatures. These adjustments enable operation outside the original Xbox hardware environment.

Rights and third-party components

Rights to the original game and its content remain with their respective owners. Steelbound does not grant permission to obtain or distribute unauthorized copies. Third-party software components are subject to their respective licenses, documented in the project’s third-party notices.

Development status

Steelbound is under development. Features and release plans may change, and public release remains subject to technical and legal review. This page does not constitute a legal determination that every use is permitted in every jurisdiction.
